The Vadapalani Murugan Temple is among the most popular temples of the capital city and is located in the region of Vadapalani in Chennai. Built about 125 years ago, this temple is considered as an auspicious place to get married and witnesses approximately 7000 marriages every year.Though its presiding deity is Lord Muruga, certain gods like Varasiddhi Vinayaka, Chokkanathar, Meenakshi Amman, Kali, Bhairava, Shanmuga with Valli and Devasena are also worshipped. The moolavar situated within the temple depicts Palani Muruga in his standing posture. The Vadapalani Murugan Temple has many niches like Dakshina Murti, Chandikeswar, Mahalakshmi, etc situated in the inner prakara.The temple has a vast courtyard and a RajaGopuram inside it which was built during its renovation during the 1920s. The Gopuram situated at the entrance of the temple has many images depicting legends from the Skanda purana. One can also witness 108 gestures of bharata natyam in the eastern tower which is more than 40 metres in height. Devotees come and pay their respect to Lord Muruga during the various pooja activities like Palliyarai, Kalasanthi, Uchikalam, Sayaratcha and Arthajama.
